The Institute for Healthcare Excellence and Director, Population Health at Synovation Medical Group

Dr. Dinenberg brings expertise in mindfulness to The Institute for Healthcare Excellence by applying both his studies and his own experience as a patient. A neck injury caused him to see how a healthcare system could help or hinder the healing journey. He teaches IHE’s curriculum with a special passion for improving the journey for both patients and healthcare providers.

Dr. Dinenberg brought mindfulness to patients in private practice for nine years on the campus of Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, California, then served as Chief Medical Officer for a population health company for four years, working to integrate mindfulness into population health initiatives.

He designed and implemented a mindfulness-based resiliency program for healthcare providers at San Mateo Medical Center, a mindfulness for peak performance program for leaders at National University, and a mindfulness for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) program for veterans with PTSD at the Palo Alto War Related Illness and Injury Study Center, Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Dr. Dinenberg currently serves as Director, Population Health at Synovation Medical Group, and sees patients with chronic pain one-on-one and in Shared Medical Appointment groups at Synovation clinics in San Diego.

Dr. Dinenberg graduated from Medical College of Pennsylvania and Hahnemann University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He completed his Occupational and Environmental Medicine residency at University of California at San Francisco, and his Masters in Public Health at the University of California at Berkeley.

He has published articles in industry journals in the field of health protection and health promotion, has written a book chapter on the health impact of lifestyle and health promotion in Health Promotion in the Workplace, 4th ed., and a book chapter on disability management and prevention in Current Occupational and Environmental Medicine, 5th edition.

Dr. Dinenberg teamed with researchers at the San Francisco VA to publish a prospective study on social support and development of post- traumatic stress disorder in the American Journal of Health Promotion titled, “Social Support May Protect Against Development of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: Findings from the Heart and Soul Study.” Dinenberg is the author of Mindfulness and Peak Performance: Touch the Ground, Touch the Sky (National University Press, 2005).
