Timothy Poulton, M.D., has a special affinity and ease for teaching communication and facilitation skills to other physicians through his work with The Institute for Healthcare Excellence (IHE). 


In his family practice, he is dedicated to delivering high quality, patient centered family medicine to ensure all patients receive the best possible care He’s a Family Medicine physician with Appalachian Mountain Community Health Centers in Asheville, North Carolina.


Dr. Poulton is a member of the faculty for the Communication in Healthcare and Relationship Centered Leadership courses for Mission Health System He is also a physician advisor to the Clinical Documentation Integrity Team, helping to seamlessly integrate coding and risk capture concepts with bedside patient care He’s a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians and the Western North Carolina Medical Society.


Dr. Poulton enjoys family medicine because it allows him to establish strong, long term relationships that can span multiple generations He believes in leveraging patient centered care and communication while partnering with patients to develop a long term plan for health and wellness.


He has published on the topics of improving physician patient relationships, patient centered care and evaluating online physical activity tools.


Dr. Poulton has a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science from Grand Valley State University He graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed his residency training at the Mountain Area Health Education Center ( in Asheville, North Carolina


He’s an outdoor enthusiast and enjoys most any activity that allows him to get outside with his wife and two boys.
